April 2 has been declared as “World Autism Awareness Day” by the United Nations in order to raise awareness about autism and to find solutions to problems related to autism. Within the framework of “Autism Awareness Month”, which started on April 2, it is aimed to encourage research on autism in the world, to increase awareness on this issue and to spread early diagnosis and treatment.

Autism Spectrum Disorder; It is a neurodevelopmental disorder whose symptoms appear within the first three years of life. It can be seen in every geography and at every socioeconomic level. It is known that it is 3-4 times more common in boys than girls. Although the cause of autism is still unknown, medical research shows that environmental factors may also play a role in addition to genetic factors. The rate of autism in the other child of the family with autism in one child is between 4-10%. In many studies on autism, it is stated that its incidence is around 1%, although it varies. In the upcoming period, epidemiological studies are planned to measure the prevalence of Autism in our country.

Some false beliefs such as silent, withdrawn, somehow talking or anxiety about being stigmatized by the society can lead to delays in the diagnosis and treatment of children with autism. It should not be forgotten that Autism is a disorder that has positive results in its treatment, the sooner it is recognized and directed appropriately.

Even if the name of autism is the same, it can be seen in every child with different symptoms, the clinical appearance, treatment and progress of each child is not the same. The most effective treatment method is special education for autism. There is no specific drug or vaccine for the treatment of autism, drug therapy is mostly used for irritability, hyperactivity, depression, intense obsessions and repetitive movements accompanying autism. It should be noted that, considering the current scientific data, there is no evidence that any alternative treatment method treats autism. However, families can suffer serious financial losses by using these methods. Consultancy from a child and adolescent mental health specialist is required before turning to these methods.
