The delta variant, which emerged in India and spread to different countries of the world, stands out as the most effective among the known mutations. This variant, which brings with it new symptoms of headache and sore throat, runny nose, hearing loss, was also seen in Turkey in the past weeks.

WHAT IS THE DELTA VARIANT, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE FROM OTHER MUTATIONS?

The biggest difference of the variant seen in different countries from other variants is that it is 60 percent more contagious. Scientific Committee Member Prof. Dr. Nurettin Yiyit stated that the prominent symptoms of the variant include headache and sore throat, runny nose, and hearing loss.

This variant, which has more cell entry, spread and more contagiousness, is considered more deadly because it can pass through the cell lock and adhere to the lungs more easily. People who do not have the antibody are more at risk in this variant.

HOW MANY COUNTRIES WAS THE DELTA VARIANT?

While the world continues its studies on the delta variant, this time “delta plus”, which is a mutation of delta, was seen in some countries. Experts interpreted this situation as the mutation of the mutated virus.

While the delta variant is seen in 65 countries, the delta plus variant has only been found in 11 countries.

Vaccines have been a great success in many different mutations that have emerged so far. However, the effect of vaccines decreases to a certain extent in the Indian variant, also known as the delta variant. According to the news in Euronews, one out of every 25 people in the UK who received a double dose of the vaccine, got the disease again due to this variant.

IS DELTA PLUS AVAILABLE IN TURKEY?

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said, “There is no delta plus yet, but the delta variant is increasing. I mentioned 138 patients with sequences, it has now increased to 224. The delta variant, which was seen in 16 provinces, is now seen in 26 provinces. 224 deltas, mainly in Istanbul, and 134 of them. He is in Istanbul,” he said.

ARE VACCINES EFFECTIVE?

According to Sinovac, Biontech, which is more effective in many different mutations, is among the vaccines whose effectiveness is reduced against the delta variant. Biontech, which provides 93 percent protection under normal conditions, has 88 percent effectiveness against the delta variant, while this rate is lower for other vaccines.
