Noting that macular degeneration, known as yellow spot disease among the people, is not a single type of disease, it can be seen in different age groups due to different reasons. Dr. Hakan Özpolat said, “Genetically transmitted ‘macular dystrophies’ in other words ‘yellow spot development disorders’ can be seen in babies and children. For this reason, all children should have their first routine eye exams between the ages of six months and a year, even if there are no problems. Yellow spot disease can occur in young men due to stress, diabetes or hypertension during pregnancy, in the middle and advanced age group due to many diseases. However, people know about the yellow spot disease that we only encounter in old age, ”he said.

Saying that yellow spot disease will not make you blind, Op. Dr. Özpolat said, “Even if damage occurs in the center of the eye, its vital vision continues. In this case, patients cannot see the details of the object they are looking at and experience a particularly serious near vision problem. There are 3 types of treatment methods for yellow spot diseases. The first option is drug injections, which we have been using since 2004, mostly into the eye. The second option is ‘photodynamic’ therapy, known as ‘cold laser’. This treatment is very effective in a certain group of yellow spot diseases. There are some yellow spot diseases in which needle and laser treatment is not effective, in which cases we may need to correct the problem with the third option, surgery. He stated that, in all yellow spot diseases except congenital yellow spot diseases, if early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are done in time, very effective results can be obtained.

Stating that cataract operation timing and lens preference are important in yellow spot diseases, Op. Dr. Hakan Özpolat said, “It is more correct to do the cataract operation neither too early nor too late, and the optimal timing is decided by the retina specialist. It is not possible to solve the yellow spot problem with only lens operation. However, with the ‘macular lenses’ which have been developed in recent years, our chance of strengthening near vision has started to increase. However, it should not be forgotten that the distance vision does not change with these lenses, only increasing the near reading power is tried. The technological products we currently have benefit patients with intermediate vision between 10 percent and 30 percent. “Multifocal lenses”, known as “smart lens” among the people, are definitely not recommended for people with yellow spot disease. Because these lenses, due to their structure, only give good results in a solid yellow point, “he said.
