Dr. Hülya Eyigör told Anadolu Agency (AA) that there are many sleep diseases defined in the world and that the Turkish Sleep Medicine Association brings up a certain theme every year to draw attention to them.
Explaining that the theme of this year is “Regular sleep for a healthy life”, Eyigör said, “The most common obstructive sleep apnea among sleep diseases. Although this disease is common, it is not fully recognized in the society. Almost 1 out of every 5 patients has sleep apnea problem. ” used the expression.
Emphasizing that sleep apnea is common in male patients, but its frequency is increased in women with menopause, Eyigör said that patients generally refer to them with the complaints of snoring, frequent waking at night, breathing interruption and daytime sleepiness.
“It can lead to sudden deaths in sleep”
Stating that they evaluated the patients together with neurology, chest and ear, nose and throat physicians, Eyigör said:
“The World Health Organization considered some diseases such as diabetes and heart diseases as a risky group during the epidemic. When sleep apnea is not treated, we see some diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular and stroke frequently. Sleep apnea can lead to sudden deaths during sleep and may pave the way for diseases. Based on this, untreated sleep apneas are also considered a risky group for Kovid-19. “
Emphasizing that the social lives of the patients were seriously affected due to the frequent interruption of their sleep at night. Dr. Eyigör stated that they had to work while sleepy during the day.
Mentioning that drowsiness can cause problems in traffic, Eyigör noted that accidents can be experienced due to lack of attention and falling asleep.
