Stating that snoring, with its simplest definition, is a partial obstruction of the airway, Medicana Çamlıca Hospital Ear Nose and Throat Specialist, Op. Dr. Şenel Alkır said, “When we breathe, there is a regular flow of air between our nose or mouth and our lungs. When we are sitting, exercising, or during any of our movements, the air we breathe produces some sounds, and these sounds are very few, if the air moves faster through the nose than through the mouth. However, since the muscles in the back of our throat are partially relaxed and even temporarily closed during sleep, a tremor occurs in the throat while the person is trying to breathe, in this case, it causes snoring.
Stating that many different health problems can cause snoring, Otorhinolaryngology Specialist Op. Symptoms include a sore throat in the morning, headache, fatigue, weakness, palpitations, difficulty falling asleep, waking up out of breath at night, irritability, attention deficit during the day, and tendency to sleep.
Stating that various treatment options can be applied depending on the underlying causes of snoring in general, Alkır stated that some types of snoring cannot be treated. On the other hand, if it occurs due to a reason such as being overweight, treatment for weight loss is applied, and if there is no medical reason for snoring, snoring can be reduced or eliminated with minor changes in the lifestyle and habits of the person. In addition, some patients may be offered devices that they can use during sleep.
