Prof. Dr. Murat Elli, “The field and subject of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology is the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of all blood diseases of childhood (anemia, bleeding / coagulation disorders, low blood components), benign and / or malignant tumors and cancers. For this reason, every discipline of pediatrics occasionally seeks help from us ”warned.

“SUCCESS RATE OF 85 PERCENT IN CHILDHOOD CANCER”

Stating that while adult cancers originate from organs (uterus, breast, lung, prostate), they are caused by tissues (such as lympho-hematological system, sympathetic nerve tissue, muscle support tissue) in children. Dr. Murat Elli said, “Genetic predisposition is very effective in childhood cancers. Childhood cancers respond much better to chemotherapy than adults. Survival is higher. While trying to extend the life expectancy in adults, long-term life is the goal in children. Most childhood cancers are not prevented, but a significant proportion of adult cancers are preventable cancers. By preventing smoking in adults, organ cancers such as lung and prostate will be prevented, and some cancers that will occur in the children of these people will also be prevented. A success reaching 85% has been achieved in childhood cancers all over the world. Our country has also been very successful in this field and has reached world standards. All kinds of treatment that can be reached in the modern world can be accessed by our children ”.

CAUTION IF YOUR CHILD HAS THESE SYMPTOMS

Pointing out that there are leukemias, brain / spinal cord tumors, lymphomas, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, muscle-soft tissue tumors, bone tumors (respectively decreasing), Elli said, “Chemotherapies are the most important protagonists in the treatment of these tumors. The most important feature of childhood tumors is that they respond well to conventional (standard) chemotherapy. Surgery and radiotherapy are always among the most important treatments. Nowadays, the importance of “targeted therapies” is increasingly being used in resistant diseases and slow-progress tumors where chemotherapy is not fully effective. Parents should definitely consult a pediatrician if the following symptoms are present. Unexpected mass and swelling in the child’s body, unexplained weakness and weakness, bruises and bruises especially above the knee and on the trunk without a history of trauma, prolonged nose and gum bleeding, prolonged and unknown fever, morning headaches and vomiting, sudden onset eye and vision disorders, “Pay attention to the symptoms of excessive and rapid weight loss.”

“THE OPINIONS OF EXPERIENCED TEACHERS FROM DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS ARE TAKEN IN TUMOR COUNCIL”

Stating that childhood cancer can be treated with a multidisciplinary approach, Prof. Dr. Murat Elli said, “In addition to the treatment departments such as chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, diagnostic departments such as radiology, nuclear medicine, pathology, physical therapy and dietitian departments, and all departments of pediatric health and diseases. The opinions of experienced teachers from different departments are taken for our patients both in our own hospital and in the Istanbul Children’s Tumor Council ”.

“STEM CELL THERAPY INCREASES SUCCESS”

Stating that bone marrow transplantation in children is applied to many diseases such as bone marrow failure, thalassemias, sickle cell anemias, immune deficiencies, metabolic diseases, high risk group and recurrent / resistant leukemias, Elli concluded his words as follows:

“Fully compatible siblings, fully compatible individuals within the family, non-relative fully compatible donors are primarily preferred. However, if this is not achieved, successful transplants are made with a semi-compatible mother / father / sibling who we call haploidentity, always ready donors. Children tolerate high dose chemotherapy better than adults. Childhood size cancers are also more sensitive to chemotherapy. In our country, the improvement of hospital conditions, good medical education and increasing supportive treatments have increased the success in the field of bone marrow transplantation. “
