Assoc. Dr. Hikmet Tekin Nacaroğlu made important statements about allergy vaccines. Assoc. Dr. Nacaroğlu stated that allergy vaccine treatment has been applied to allergic patients for more than a century and said, “It is based on the principle of administering products obtained from allergens to which the patient is sensitive to the patient in increasing doses and at certain time intervals. In recent years, the frequency of allergic rhinitis, food allergy, allergic eczema and asthma has been increasing. Especially in asthma and allergic rhinitis, treatments for symptoms such as allergy medications and nasal drops are used in the first place, and patients who do not respond to some treatment, whose allergy to a specific allergen is determined by skin test and blood tests, and whose clinical findings are compatible with the tests, can be vaccinated against this allergen. It is called specific immunotherapy. Allergy vaccine treatment is applied in cases where the allergen substance shown by skin test and blood test causes complaints in the person, the allergen protection and drug treatment have not benefited enough, and the person does not want to use drugs for a long time. he spoke.

Noting that there are two types of vaccination, Assoc. Dr. Nacaroğlu continued:

“The first of these is the method called subcutaneous immunotherapy, which is applied by injecting allergen extract under the skin. In this method, the doses are increased at certain intervals by starting with low-dose vaccination. According to different treatment protocols, vaccination is done at weekly, 15-day, 1-month intervals, and continues for 3 to 5 years. With this method, vaccination against grass pollen, house dust mites, mold fungi, various tree pollens, animal epithelium (cat hair) can be done. The second is the method known as sublingual/oral immunotherapy applied as a sublingual tablet. In this method, allergy to a specific allergen is determined and symptomatic Sublingual preparations prepared in the form of tablets or drops are used every day for 3 years in patients who do not respond to treatments. After the first few doses are administered in the hospital, the patient continues to apply at home. The side effects are usually itching and irritation in the mouth, which usually disappears after the treatment. Hoarseness, choking feeling and The likelihood of serious side effects such as shortness of breath is very low. For both treatment methods, the success of the treatment depends on regular practice.

Assoc. Dr. Hikmet Tekin Nacaroğlu pointed out that vaccine treatment has both therapeutic and protective effects and gave the following information:

“It has been shown in studies that it reduces the sensitivity to allergens, reduces the symptoms of the disease, the need for medication, and increases the quality of life. It also has a protective effect in preventing the development of new allergies and asthma. At this point, it is the only treatment method that changes the natural course of allergic disease. Vaccination treatment is not recommended for patients who are incompatible with treatment, children under 5 years of age, severe asthmatics, cancer, immune system diseases, psychological disorders, severe hypertension and heart disease. Standardized allergen extracts are used in vaccination. There is no cortisone in the vaccine treatment. Depending on the allergen content, there may be swelling, redness or general side effects at the injection site. Therefore, the vaccine treatment should be done under the supervision of an allergist and under hospital conditions.Patients should wait 30 minutes after the injection. should not leave the hospital without showing the hand and the injection site to the physician.
