Assoc. Dr. Hikmet Tekin Nacaroğlu warned against the spring allergy that increases with the spring, namely hay fever. Assoc. Dr. Noting that one of the most important allergens is pollen, Nacaroğlu said, “In spring, there is a serious increase in the severity of allergic diseases with pollen.
The first pollen-producing plants are usually trees and release pollen in the spring. This is followed by meadow pollen at the beginning of the spring and summer period. Herbs, on the other hand, release pollen mostly in late summer and autumn. The type of pollen and the time of release varies according to the season and the region of residence. Weather may affect the severity and time of the allergic period. A mild winter may cause a more severe pollen season. “If the spring is warmer and humid than normal, more meadows will grow and the season will be more violent,” he said.
Mentioning that the pollens settle in the respiratory tract through the skin, eyes, nose and breathing, Assoc. Dr. Nacaroğlu continued as follows: “While this situation is not a problem for many people, pollen activates the immune system in people with allergies. As a result, it causes problems such as skin itching, nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal congestion, redness in the eyes, and watering.
Again, it is known that allergy does not only affect the nose, but also affects the lungs in many patients, causing asthma symptoms such as cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Skin test and blood allergen-specific IgE test can be used for diagnosis to detect the allergen causing the complaints. The skin test is fast and reliable tests. It is a test that does not cause pain or pain to the patient and results in a short time. It is usually done on the inside of the arm. Liquid test material containing allergen is dripped onto the skin. After the test is applied, it is waited for 10-15 minutes and then the sensitivity is evaluated according to the skin responses obtained.
Assoc. Dr. Nacaroğlu stated that the first thing to do to get rid of pollen allergy as in all allergic diseases is to stay away from allergens, “However, in pollen allergy, it is not possible to avoid the allergen. While grass and wormwood pollen spreads over distances of several hundred meters, tree pollen, especially birch, can reach distances many kilometers by winds. For this reason, airing your home should be avoided, especially in the morning, when pollen is at its peak, to reduce exposure to pollen.
Due to the increase in the number of pollen on warm, dry, sunny days and early mornings, it should be kept in open areas for as little time as possible, especially during the hours when the amount of pollen is high. It may be preferable to stay in the open air, especially in the evening hours after sunset, when the amount of pollen is less. Again, wearing hats and sunglasses when going out and taking a shower after returning home contribute to reducing allergen density. Clothes should not be dried outdoors in summer because of the risk of pollen sticking to the laundry and causing allergies by contacting in closed areas. “Pollen-holding air filters should be used in the car and care should be taken to change the pollen filters during car maintenance.”
Assoc. Dr. Nacaroğlu gave the following information about the treatment:
“In spring allergy, namely hay fever, treatments for symptoms such as allergy medications and nasal drops are used first. Vaccination can be performed in patients who do not respond to some treatment, whose sensitivity to allergen is determined by skin tests and blood tests, and whose clinical findings are compatible with the tests. This allergen is called the vaccine, or immunotherapy treatment. Vaccine therapy; It can be used in cases where the allergen substance shown by skin and blood test causes complaints in the person, does not get enough benefit from allergen protection and drug treatment, and the person does not want long-term drug treatment.
