Turkish Thoracic Society Tobacco Control Working Group Member and Izmir Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Chest Diseases, Professor. Dr. In his written statement, Oğuz Kılınç pointed out that smoking addiction is not a situation that is abandoned when desired, a simple habit or a social behavior.
Stating that smoking addiction, which is a curable disease such as high blood pressure, diabetes and tuberculosis, can be easily treated with the help of scientifically proven effective drugs when intervened by healthcare professionals, Kılınç said that all tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and other heated tobacco products contain nicotine, which causes a strong addiction. He explained that nicotine addiction is an addiction equivalent to substance addictions.
Kılınç emphasized that during the month of Ramadan, a period in which no substance can be consumed during the day and addicts can stay away from smoking during this period, stated that smokers can control their addiction during this period, so this may be an opportunity.
Pointing out that addicts plan their treatment during the month of Ramadan and get help from smoking cessation polyclinics and physicians, it can be easier to get rid of smoking with scientifically proven methods, and offered the following suggestions for those who do not want to quit smoking and start again in Ramadan:
“Smokers should not code it as a temporary process in their brains. They should realize that this is a behavior that they need to get rid of not only during Ramadan, but for a lifetime. If they think so, ‘I will quit smoking not only in Ramadan, but for the whole lifetime.’ If they say and set out in this way, the month of Ramadan can really be an occasion to quit smoking. “
“Serious risks occur in the lungs and heart, which are the organs that smoking first comes into contact”
Prof. Dr. Oğuz Kılınç reminded that cigarettes contain more than 8 thousand chemicals and approximately 90 of them are carcinogenic, and listed his warnings as follows:
“With every breath of smoking, the risk of a fatal or disabling disease onset at the cellular level is 50 percent. Even if you smoke only 1 cigarette a day, there are serious risks in the lung and heart, which are the organs that cigarette first touch. Drinking repeatedly at sahur and iftar causes high concentrations of nicotine and other toxic substances to enter the bloodstream. This may cause underlying or undiagnosed diseases to reach serious levels. Even sudden heart attacks and cerebral hemorrhages may develop.
Noting that 7 out of every 10 smokers say they want to quit smoking, but only 3 of them make any attempt to quit smoking, Kılınç said that it is not always possible for patients to get rid of smoking addiction on their own, 3 or 4 out of 100 people can get rid of this addiction. He explained that if appropriate interventions and effective treatments are applied, the rate of permanent tobacco elimination can be 10 times higher than self-elimination.
Kılınç pointed out that treatment of the disease in smoking cessation polyclinics in the first, second, and third health care clinics, which are recognized by the Ministry of Health and which are scientifically proven, increases the success rate, and that those who want to get rid of tobacco products can call Alo 171 and get an appointment at the nearest smoking cessation clinic and stated that the treatment given here is free of charge.
Stating that the earlier the intake of tobacco products into the body is stopped, the faster the body turns towards health, Kılınç emphasized that 20 minutes after getting rid of smoking, cell damage begins to heal.
