Emphasizing that diseases caused by obesity seriously reduce the quality of life and reduce life expectancy if not treated, Demir used the following statements regarding treatment:

“The most accurate approach in the diagnosis and treatment of obesity is made by a multidisciplinary team. A decision should be made with a good evaluation and research for a permanent and definitive solution. Surgery is the most effective treatment for patients diagnosed with morbid obesity in the long term. Surgeries such as sleeve gastrectomy or stomach reduction, RNY / mini gastric bypass, duodenal switch are all a type of bariatric surgery. Although the feeding process varies after bariatric surgery, the first 10 days can be determined as the liquid period, the 10 to 20 days the puree period, and the transition period to solid food after the 20th day. In this process, taking into account that the new gastric sac created by surgery will have a capacity of approximately 150 ml of food, an appropriate nutrition program should be established. The aim should be to stay healthy while achieving weight loss. It is necessary to turn the eating habits into a lifestyle and while doing this, not to cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies. “


Stating that attention should be paid to protein intake in order for the tissues to heal rapidly after surgery and to accelerate fat loss, Özlem Demir said, “Protein supplementation starts in the liquid period. Generally, normal nutrition is provided in the second month after surgery. “It is very important to manage the process well, taking into account the daily protein, vitamin-mineral and fluid use in the nutrition program specially prepared for the patient, for the continuity of weight loss.”

Stressing that patients should be supported with sufficient carbohydrate consumption and the use of whole grain products for blood sugar control, and the use of unsaturated fat for the fat group, Öğr. See. Özlem Demir said, “Sugar-free foods should be preferred in the program. The use of iron-containing multivitamin tablets and calcium citrate should be recommended with the approval of the physician and the cooking techniques such as steaming, boiling, oven and grill, ”he said.

Explaining that it should be aimed to minimize the problems such as nausea, vomiting or reflux that may occur after surgery, Demir said, “Since excessive food may cause vomiting and enlargement of the pouch over time, it should be recommended to stop eating when satiety is felt. In addition, consuming liquid during meals and not making solid-liquid separation can cause excessive food consumption and weight gain. For this reason, the amount of fluid consumption should be determined specifically for the patient and the liquids should be consumed in sips throughout the day. Sugary and acidic beverages should be avoided ”.

Emphasizing that the bariatric surgery method should not be considered alone in the fight against obesity, Özlem Demir said, “Correct eating habits should be the most important step in reaching the goal and being healthy”.
