Neurology Specialist Prof. Dr. Barış Metin gave information about the brain check-up, which is used in the early diagnosis of brain diseases.
I have dementia in my family, do I have it too?
Noting that the brain check-up was carried out at the request of the patients as well as on the recommendation of the specialist doctor, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “Our patients often ask, ‘Is there a problem with my brain? I want to review my brain functions’, ‘I have dementia in my family, I wonder if I will too?’, ‘I am very forgetful. Is there another disease underlying it?’ We are asked to measure various brain functions with doubts and complaints such as This is colloquially called a brain check-up.” said.
To measure brain health; brain check up
Noting that the brain check-up consists of a series of examinations, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “Brain check-up is used to measure the brain health of patients. In fact, it is one of the tests we do to see if the patient does not have any problems at the moment, but whether there is a risk of developing a significant disease in the future.” he said.
Dementia risk can be visualized with MRI
Noting that a series of examinations such as MRI, electroenography, neuropsychological tests were applied in brain check-up, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “MRI can be done from brain imaging methods. What does MRI give us? For example, we have a patient who we suspect has dementia. He also has dementia in his family. He says he’s also a little forgetful. When we do the brain MRI of this patient, if the brain is not very serious but shrinking in the early period, there is a loss of volume in some areas, which we can see when we look at this MRI. If there is such a situation, we can take precautions in the early period without dementia in the patient.” said.
With brain mapping, the cause of forgetfulness can be understood
Noting that by applying some tests to people with forgetfulness, the reasons for this can be revealed. Dr. Barış Metin said, “Whether the forgetfulness is due to an attention disorder or to a memory disorder due to Alzheimer’s disease, it can be shown in many cases with the help of brain mapping.” he said.
prof. Dr. Barış Metin also noted that neuropsychological tests can detect the stage of forgetfulness or loss of cognitive function and whether there is a risk of progression.
Who should have a brain check up?
Recommending that people over a certain age, especially individuals over 60 years old, have this type of check-up done every 5 years, even if they do not have any complaints. Dr. Barış Metin said, “Because dementia is a disease that progresses very insidiously in the brain. Before the patient realizes this, dementias can cause serious brain damage. In order to detect these early, it is necessary to have a brain check-up every 5 years.” he said.
Early signs of dementia may benefit from treatments
Noting that in addition to advanced age, there may be patients who need to have brain check-ups more frequently and earlier, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said, “For example, we have a 55-year-old patient. He has a slight forgetfulness. In his family, his mother and father had dementia. I recommend this patient to have such a series of tests, including MRI and neuropsychological tests, because if there are signs of early dementia in these tests, this patient may benefit from some early interventions, lifestyle changes, and various neurological and psychiatric drug treatments.
There may be mutations that cause familial dementia
Pointing out that there are mutations that cause familial dementia, if there are first-degree and second-degree relatives, who have more than one dementia patient in their family. Dr. Barış Metin said that genetic tests may also be requested to detect them.
Brain check-up can also show the level of stress in the brain
Noting that not only elderly patients but also young patients may have serious concerns about their brain health, Prof. Dr. Barış Metin said:
“For example, the person is under very serious stress. It has serious wear and tear. But this can manifest itself in various vague complaints. He may not realize how much stress he is under. When we do this brain check-up, we can see how much a person is under a serious load and how worn out he is. Therefore, when young patients think that they cannot use their performance enough, a brain check-up can be done to see the effect of the stress level they are exposed to or to see if there is another brain disease in our young patients who think they have some forgetfulness. We can say that young patients should do this not routinely like the elderly, but when various anxieties and poor performance occur. I recommend that elderly patients have these examinations at regular intervals, even if they do not have any complaints, every 5 years.”
How is the brain check-up applied?
Brain check-up is applied by a scientific and expert staff in different branches. The test results are evaluated multidimensionally, and then solutions are produced with a personalized treatment program. In the brain check-up, the mental activities and performance of the brain are evaluated. With computerized EEG devices, it is checked whether the brain is working properly or not. Functional disorders are revealed with tests that measure memory and attention. In brain check-up, brain functions are monitored and brain map is drawn with computerized EEG (CEEG) device. In addition, cognitive tests are applied to measure memory and attention with the help of computers.
