Experts say that frequent sickness is considered normal, especially for children who attend daycare or school. Stating that the situation may be slightly different in children born with congenital immunodeficiency, Pediatric Diseases, Pediatric Immunology Specialist Prof. Dr. Hülya Ercan Sarıçoban said, “Although children are weaker in fighting diseases, they may have to struggle with different diseases in their later lives. At this point, families should be very careful while observing children in every sense, ”he warned the families.

Yeditepe University Kozyatağı Hospital Pediatric Immunology Specialist Prof. Dr. Hülya Ercan Sarıçoban said, “About 500 different diseases have been identified that cause this problem. While frequent and mild forms are seen 1 in every 200 births, severe and rare types occur in 1 in 10 thousand births. “It is more common in societies where consanguineous marriages are common as in our country.”

Underlining that immunodeficiency is a genetic disorder and that it is not possible to fix it with what the person eats or drinks, Prof. Dr. Sarıçoban said, “The important thing at this point is to be protected from opportunistic infections that may be caused by immunodeficiency. In order to achieve this, preventive treatments are required depending on the type of the disease, ”he said.

Stating that a simple cold should be cured with simple drugs in an average of 1 week, Prof. Dr. Sarıçoban said, “The child should definitely investigate whether there is a problem in the immune system if antibiotics are to be used in every illness, if breathing openers are used every time or if their eczema does not improve, if their tops are covered with fungi and viruses.”

Stating that even late abortions in newborn babies can be a symptom of immunodeficiency, Prof. Dr. Hülya Ercan Sarıçoban said, “A baby should have a belly drop within 15 days. If the belly does not fall during this process, it should be evaluated together with the immune system and further testing should be done.

Stating that the children in question should not be kept in very crowded environments where the infection can spread easily, because their immunity is impaired to different degrees, Prof. Dr. Sarıçoban explained the following about other points that parents should pay attention to:

“In addition, timely vaccination is extremely important in these children. However, in some of the immunocompromised children, we cannot administer live vaccines such as measles, tuberculosis, chickenpox or oral polio. Because the immune system of these children can be infected by the vaccine microbe. Therefore, early diagnosis is of great importance. Especially in newborns, a diagnosis should be made before the tuberculosis vaccine applied in the second month. It is important to check at least a complete blood count and lymphocyte values before tuberculosis vaccination in children who cannot leave the hospital for a long time after birth, who take antibiotics, have eczema in their body, have thrush in the mouth, and have diarrhea that do not improve, especially if their parents are relatives. Otherwise, by administering tuberculosis vaccine to the sick child, widespread TB may develop and lead to much more severe consequences. “
