Anemia caused by the decrease in the blood, which is the source of life, and the iron deficiency associated with it reduce the quality of life. Expressing that iron deficiency has an important role especially on the mental development of children, experts state that fruit juice should be consumed to increase the absorption of iron from foods.
“Anemia is defined as a decrease in the amount of hemoglobin in the blood. This causes iron deficiency, ”said Nuh Naci Yazgan University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. Dr. Neriman İnanç pointed out that iron deficiency usually occurs during childhood and adolescence and pregnancy, when growth is very rapid.
“One out of every 5 men, one out of every 3 women, one out of every 2 pregnant and one out of every 5 children in the world suffers from anemia. However, most of them do not know their situation, unfortunately, “İnanç said:” The prevalence of anemia in children between 0 and 5 years of age is between 4 and 20 percent in developed countries, while in less developed countries this rate goes up to 80 percent in the same age group. In our country, this rate is as high as 50 percent. “
Vitamin C increases iron absorption
Noting that iron is found in both animal and vegetable foods, Prof. Faith says, “However, not all of the iron in foods can be absorbed in the body. In order for the iron we take to be beneficial, we should consume it with foods containing vitamin C. For example, 500 milligrams of vitamin C taken with food increases the absorption of iron 6 times. Therefore, fruit juices are a good source to increase vitamin intake.
In particular, consuming fruit juices that contain vitamin C, such as orange juice, pineapple juice, and grapefruit juice with a high protein and iron meal increases iron absorption.
