Stating that obesity has more serious consequences than expected, General Surgery and Obesity Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. Uğur Ekici said, “Obesity itself is already a disease. Of course, it can lead to many ailments or serious diseases. Cancers such as hypertension, diabetes (diabetes), cholesterol, heart diseases, sleep apnea, respiratory distress, knee pain, low back pain, muscle and joint pain, migraine, infertility, breast, bowel and ovarian cancers can occur due to obesity. Obesity itself and its co-morbidities cause fatal problems.

“MANY DISEASES END AFTER OBESITY TREATMENT”

Ekici, who also gave information about obesity surgeries, said, “When we consider all types of obesity surgeries, the approximate success rate is close to each other. The rate of patients who completely recovered from hypertension and diabetes after surgery is around 70 percent. The rate of patients who return to treatment with pills while using insulin injections is also quite high. Gastric sleeve surgery prevents diabetes and hypertension by 90 percent in total.

Noting that after obesity treatment, there was improvement in co-morbidities, Ekici said:

“Knee pain and high cholesterol do not continue after surgery due to weight loss. Heart diseases are also reduced due to the decrease in sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. Kidney diseases are significantly reduced due to the disappearance of diabetes. We have seen that patients with sleep apnea syndrome completely recovered from this disease after surgery. When all diseases are considered, the chance of success is over 80%. With surgical treatment, diseases caused by obesity are largely eliminated.”

MOST FREQUENTLY USED METHODS IN OBESITY TREATMENT

Ekici, who gave information about the most frequently used methods in the treatment of obesity, said, “There are many treatments for obesity. Surgical treatments and endoscopic procedures are the most commonly used methods. Surgical or endoscopic procedure is decided according to the body mass index criteria used to determine the obesity degree of the patients and the weight status of their bodies. According to these values, we evaluate the body mass index between 20-25 as normal, 25-30 as overweight, 30-35 as obese, and 35 and above as morbidly obese.

Stating that the body mass index values are important during the treatment phase, Ekici said, “We consider it appropriate to apply surgical treatment to our patients with a body mass index above 35, with obesity and any co-morbidities, or with a body mass index above 40 without any co-morbidities. We intervene in our overweight patients below this index with non-surgical, endoscopic methods.

“THE TUBE STOMACH IS MOST PREFERRED”

Ekici said, “There are many methods for patients who are suitable for surgery.”

“The most preferred one is the tube stomach. Not only us, but about 75% of surgeons all over the world perform sleeve gastrectomy as the first method. Because sleeve gastrectomy surgery has its own serious advantages. It is a more tolerable method for the patient. It does not disrupt the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal system, the flow system. It does not prevent the absorption of some vitamins and minerals necessary for the body. For this reason, we prefer this method first in patients with a suitable body mass index.”

STOMACH BALLOON TREATMENT

Expressing that gastric balloon treatment is a short-term procedure, Ekici said, “The most applied endoscopic methods are gastric balloon and stomach botox. Gastric balloon is a procedure applied in 15-20 minutes. With the help of endoscopy, a balloon is sent into the stomach and inflated under mild anesthesia and the volume of the stomach is reduced. In this way, it allows patients to eat less and lose weight in this process. The effect of this method lasts for 6 months. There are also balloons that are 1 year old. Since one-year balloons are suitable for re-inflating, they can be inflated again at the end of the 6th month, and there is no need for a new balloon to be inserted.

STOMACH BOTOX REDUCE THE FEELING OF APPEAT

Providing information about stomach botox, Ekici said, “In stomach botox, a drug that prevents the stomach muscles from working is applied to certain parts of the stomach. This drug relaxes the muscles that allow the stomach to contract and transfer the contents to the intestines. In this way, the foods in the stomach stay for a longer time, reducing the feeling of appetite in the body and giving a feeling of satiety. Relaxation of the muscles, the person’s eating frequency and amount of eating will decrease. Therefore, the patient is less hungry because the emptying time of the stomach is prolonged. It is the same drug as botox made for cosmetic purposes,” he said.
