From the Department of Breast Surgery, Dr. Instructor Member Pelin Basım made important statements by stating that pesticides used in many fields today increase the risk of breast cancer. Dr. Instructor Basım pointed out that although the rate of increase in breast cancer has decreased since 2005, it is still the most common type of cancer in women, “Breast cancer still maintains its second place in cancer-related deaths in women.

Although social education in breast cancer is generally aimed at introducing breast self-examination and early diagnosis methods and ensuring that women comply with routine controls, the necessity of identifying risk factors and focusing on the factors that can be eliminated should not be underestimated.

Today, news has been frequently published in the media about quitting smoking and alcohol habits, fighting obesity, reducing the consumption of trans fats, and getting people to exercise regularly. Pesticides, on the other hand, could not catch the desired attention in the media, although their widespread use and cause-effect relationships with breast cancer have been proven by respected scientists.

Mentioning that the areas where pesticides are used are increasing rapidly today, threatening human health, Dr. Instructor Member Basım used the following statements:

“It seems possible to meet the need for nutrients to meet the rapidly and uncontrollably increasing world population only with low-cost products with high efficiency and quality per unit area. While pesticides increase the amount of products, they also cause air, soil and water pollution, breaks in the food chain, and thus irreparable damage to human health.

Today, we can clearly state that pesticides, which are used without control, unconsciously and without taking any protective measures, cause cancer types both in the affected individuals and in their future generations with the breaks in the genetic sequence. So much so that there are scientific studies showing that breast cancer increases 9 times in people who consume these foods that are under chronic pesticide exposure or contaminated (contaminated) with pesticides.

On the other hand, in addition to its direct genomic effects, the views that pesticides trigger breast cancer through indirect means such as precocious puberty, early menarche, decreased fertility, and decreased breast milk production, thanks to their estrogen-like components, have also triggered trends in the scientific world to reduce pesticide use.

Basım also mentioned that farmers and agricultural workers are more likely to get some types of cancer compared to other occupational groups and said, “This situation is attributed to chronic pesticide exposure today. In addition, in cases where the same agricultural product comes into contact with more than one chemical, things get even more complicated, and the food chain continues to carry carcinogenic effects to every point it reaches.

While encouraging the societies to have examinations in hospitals for the early diagnosis of diseases, the fact that the use of these scientifically proven carcinogens has not yet been limited must have drawn the attention of the World Health Organization.
