Dr. Faculty Member Burak Çakçak stated that during the Covid 19 pandemic process, disruption of the nutrition routines of children who receive distance education at home, decreased exposure to sunlight and inactivity can cause weight problems, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and a decrease in immunity.
THE SUN’S MOST IMPORTANT SOURCE OF VITAMIN D
Emphasizing that vitamin D deficiency is common in children who do not go out in the sun, Dr. Çakçak noted that with vitamin D deficiency, muscle weakness, leg pain, growth retardation, restlessness, insomnia, excessive sweating, recurrent upper respiratory tract infections occur. Explaining that the most important source of vitamin D is the sun, Dr. Çakçak also reminded that milk and dairy products, egg yolk and fish are also sources of vitamin D.
UNBALANCED NUTRITION WEAKEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Pointing out that imbalanced nutrition can weaken the immune system in children and pave the way for the course of Covid 19, Dr. Çakçak emphasized the importance of vitamins A, C, D, E and minerals such as selenium and zinc in combating infections. Stating that the foods rich in vitamin A are milk, egg yolk, carrot, green vegetables and fruits, Dr. Çakçak said, “Vitamin C, which is an antioxidant, also has immunity enhancing properties. Foods rich in vitamin C are green vegetables, citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, rosehips and parsley. “Among the rich sources of vitamin E are broccoli, mango, kiwi and almonds,” he said.
VITAMINS SHOULD NOT BE CONSUMED UNCONSCIOUSLY
Explaining that zinc is a mineral involved in important enzymatic tasks in the body, Dr. Çakçak continued his words as follows:
“Foods rich in zinc are shrimp, seafood, red meat, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, milk and eggs. Selenium is an antioxidant mineral. Seafood, chicken and turkey meat are included in oil seeds. Omega-3s are important in fighting infection. Fish, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds are a source of omega 3. Oatmeal can be included in meals as a source of beta glucan. Propolis and echinacea can also be used intermittently as immune enhancers. Intestinal flora is also very important for the immune system. In order to regulate the intestinal micro flora, foods with high fiber content, vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grain foods, legumes, yogurt and kefir should be preferred. “
Dr. Çakçak emphasized that unnecessary and unconscious consumption of vitamins can lead to liver failure, kidney stone formation and stomach disorders.
NUTRITION SAMPLE FOR CHILDREN GOING TO SCHOOL
Reminding that schools were opened in the controlled normalization process, Dr. Çakçak said, “In this process, adequate consumption of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals for a strong immune system in protection from infections, as well as adequate sunlight contact and a balanced diet are important.
