Expert Dr. Arzu Gökdemir Yanardag said that as the weather warms up as summer enters, some measures should be taken to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Stating that while preparing the skin for summer, it is necessary to benefit from the supplements that will meet the need for moisture, not to interfere with the daily skin care routine and to use a sunscreen cream suitable for the skin type.
However, especially in hot weather, with the increase of sweating, the mask may cause exacerbation of skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis by trapping the sweat in the skin. The most common of these is the skin problem called ‘maskne’, which is a type of ‘mechanical acne’ caused by the use of masks. The use of double masks increases the effect of the humid and airless environment even more. “Since the masks used during the pandemic process are not effective in protecting from the sun, it is important not to neglect to apply sunscreen even if the mask is worn.”
‘IT DOES NOT PROVIDE FULL PROTECTION AGAINST HARMFUL EFFECTS OF THE SUN’
Noting that wearing make-up while wearing a mask will create a layer on the skin surface that remains moist and closed, causing the pores to become clogged, Yanardag said, “Therefore, colored sunscreens can be preferred instead of concealers such as foundation or powder. Another advantage of using colored sunscreen is that it provides mechanical protection on the skin surface. The most important factor that we need to protect our skin in summer is the sun. Masks used due to the pandemic do not provide full protection against the harmful effects of sun rays, regardless of their color and thickness. For this reason, it is recommended to apply sunscreen cream while going out in the sun during the pandemic process, and to wear a mask approximately 1 hour after applying to absorb the cream.
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A SUN PROTECTION
Saying that sunscreen should be chosen according to the skin type, Yanardag said, “People with oily and glowing skin should prefer water-based products with a protection factor of at least 30 and above, which do not clog pores. For those with dry and sensitive skin, sunscreens with moisturizing effect will also be more suitable. Those who have to wear make-up can also prefer colored sunscreens, provided that they are suitable for their skin structure. In addition, the skin should be washed with a suitable cleansing gel every evening and then moisturized with a moisturizing cream. After getting up in the morning, after washing the face with clear water, applying sunscreen cream should form the daily skin care routine in summer months.
