Prof. Dr. Ömer Karadaş said that while the coronavirus was at the forefront with its infection characteristics in the first place, neurological findings were observed to a great extent as time passed. Prof. Dr. Karadaş noted that when these are classified among themselves, neurological findings emerge clearly with the bad course of the coronavirus. Prof. Dr. Karadaş said, “These neurological findings are encountered in a wide range from headache to unconsciousness. These consciousness disorders also include epilepsy, or epileptic seizures.

In relation to the coronavirus, these fall into two groups. Normally, a patient with epilepsy has coronavirus, in which case what could be or not at all; but he has been caught in coronavirus, has been unconscious. Here, the question mark on our minds makes us think, “Is this a disorder of consciousness, blurring of consciousness, disorders in mental functions, is it a seizure?”

Prof. Dr. Noting that these seizures can be detected with neurological examinations, Karadaş said, “We saw seizures in some patients when we performed these examinations. As a result, we did not see that high when we looked at ‘whether it creates a higher epileptic seizure’ because it is a pandemic. Especially among the intensive care patients, there were patients who had epileptic seizures, and their detection is very valuable. After detecting them, we stop these seizures for quick intervention and save the life of this person because it threatens the life. used the expressions.

Prof. Dr. Karadaş emphasized that such seizures can also occur when a person uses an unexpected drug, consumes too much alcohol or stays in intensive care due to another disease under normal conditions, and said that epileptic seizures may occur because the coronavirus affects many organs and reveals such imbalances. Prof. Dr. Karadaş said, “When the coronavirus appeared, there was a situation where everyone was discussing ‘how much does it affect the brain, does it have to enter the brain to affect the brain?’ When we really look at it, we can say that apart from the feature of this virus directly affecting the brain, some substances created by the body against this virus indirectly affect the brain and cause them. After the coronavirus was caught, we also came to us with a suspicious seizure story, we revealed them through neurological examinations. In patients with seizures, when they have a single seizure, treatment is often not needed or is completed with very short-term treatment. It is very likely that it does not have seizures again.

Stating that the situation is different if he has epilepsy, Prof. Dr. Karadaş said, “Epilepsy seizures may be seizures in a limited way, the person may not answer your question when you come across them, they may come up with seizures that we call bigger seizures than swallowing, licking, meaningless movements, correcting the body. It should be kept in mind that patients who have coronavirus without a patient have confusion, and if there are some changes in their mental functions, there may always be an epileptic seizure. If there is a question mark in our mind, it is important to clarify, follow up and control them with a rapid intervention.

Prof. Dr. Stating that they have been examining patients with epilepsy for years, Karadaş said, “Some of the epilepsy patients we were following had coronavirus during this period. As a result of our observations and examinations, we did not see a serious increase in seizures associated with the coronavirus. Still, we can say that some patients have a slight increase in seizures with coronavirus. During this period, these patients should take the treatment with the coronavirus quickly. There are some medications and supportive treatments we give for coronavirus. We recommend using drugs that will not interact with them first, without seizures or if they do, we can control them more easily and fix the patient, “he said.
