Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. Ali Zırh conveyed the well-known misconceptions in the treatment of Parkinson’s and brain battery.
“FALSE: IT IS POSSIBLE TO PROTECT FROM PARKINSON’S DISEASE”
Stating that Parkinson’s disease occurs with the loss of neurons that produce ‘dopamine’ in the brain and consequently the decrease in this substance, Zırh said, “Unfortunately, there is no diet, lifestyle or exercise program to prevent Parkinson’s disease. Except for familial cases, which are very rare, the disease can be seen in any person over the age of 60 between 1-3 percent.
PARKINSON IS NOT ONLY A DISEASE IN THE ELDERLY
Stating that the information that Parkinson’s disease is seen only in the elderly is not true, Zırh said, “Although Parkinson’s disease is generally a disease after the age of 60, 5 to 10 percent of the patients have the age of onset between 20 and 50. Genetic causes should be investigated in young patients. The presence of Parkinson’s disease in a parent or sibling in the family increases the risk of developing the disease in that person. Hereditary Parkinson’s disease usually starts at a young age and constitutes about 5 percent of all Parkinson’s patients.
NOT EVERY HAND SHAMPY IS A SYMPTOM OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE.
Stating that there is hand tremor among the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, but not every hand tremor is a symptom of Parkinson’s, Zırh said:
“The tremors in Parkinson’s disease are mostly seen when the patient is at rest, putting his arms on the edge of the sofa. When we tell patients with these tremors to raise their arms, their tremors stop. Especially in older patients; Facial state that can be expressed as ‘mask face’ with ‘counting money’ trembling in the hands, slowing down in movements, non-participation of the arms in the body oscillation and walking close to the body, dulling of the gaze and decrease in facial expressions, with small steps and walking leaning forward should suggest that this disease may be in the initial stage, and patients should consult a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders.”
FALSE: BRAIN PIECES CANNOT BE APPLIED TO PATIENTS OF ADVANCED AGE
Zırh said, “In some cases, surgery cannot be recommended to a young patient, we can also recommend surgery to an elderly patient.” .
IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE A CHILD AFTER BRAIN PATTERN SURGERY
Emphasizing that brain pacing surgery is not an obstacle to having a child, Zırh said, “We can recommend a pacing device to young patients who do not receive adequate response from medical treatment. Patients who are operated in this way and regain their health can have children with a close follow-up. A brain battery is not an obstacle to having a child. We also have patients who have a brain pacemaker and who take their children in their arms in a healthy way.”
ANOTHER TREATMENT CAN BE APPLIED TO THE PATIENT AFTER THE BRAIN PATTERN IS INSTALLED
Noting that the adjustable brain battery brings many advantages, Zırh said, “The advantage of the brain battery is; It is a controllable, programmable and adjustable treatment method. If necessary, we may change or reduce the electrical settings, turn off or remove the battery. For this reason, if another treatment method superior to this treatment can be developed in Parkinson’s disease in the coming years, all kinds of new treatment methods can be applied in patients who have undergone neurosurgery surgery.
FALSE: PATIENT SUBJECTS DURING BRAIN SPECIAL SURGERY
Zırh stated that the patient did not feel pain during the operation and could even chat.
“During the surgery, our aim is to locate the cells responsible for the disease and the anatomical formations around it. For this reason, we do the surgery, keeping the patient awake, talking to each other. We can observe the responses of patients to very low current stimuli. In this way, it is easier to reach the problematic area by measuring the patient’s reactions. In this section, the patient does not feel any pain, on the contrary, the patient is more comfortable by chatting, and the patient who is operated on awake can share what he feels and contribute to the success of the surgery. Patients only feel the pain of 6 needles in total. At the beginning of the surgery, we attach a frame to the patient’s head. The patient hears the prick of four narcotic needles during the fitting of the frame while in his room before the surgery. In the surgery, we anesthetize the skin while making a small hole on both sides. Apart from that, the surgery is painless and goes through talking to the patient.”
It is NOT forbidden to do sports AFTER THE SURGERY
Expressing that there is no change in the normal daily lives of the patients who are placed in batteries, Zırh noted that the patients can continue all kinds of sports activities such as tennis and billiards, which are not too harsh and will not cause head trauma, can ride a bicycle and swim.
Adding that patients with a brain battery can benefit from medical imaging methods, Zırh said, “Today’s technology enables these patients to perform all kinds of MR imaging with appropriate settings in centers with sufficient information and equipment.”
THE BRAIN BATTERY DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED SHORTLY
Stating that the lifespan of brain batteries is extended with the developing technology, Zırh said, “Until recently, we were applying batteries that could not be charged externally, and the lifespan of brain batteries in Parkinson’s patients was between 4-6 years. In dystonia patients who needed higher electrical current, this period could be even shorter. Thanks to the developing technology in recent years, it is possible to apply batteries that can be charged externally and have a life of up to 20-25 years; We have started to use devices with technology that can adjust the direction and intensity of the electric current we give into the brain as we want. Thanks to these developments, on the one hand, our success rates in treatment increase, on the other hand, there is no need for battery replacement for a long time.”
