Emphasizing that single meal nutrition, which can be defined as 23 hours of hunger, not eating, eating a single large meal for 1 hour, has become widespread, Beykent University School of Health Sciences Department of Nutrition and Dietetics Research Assist. See. Eda Balcı warned against this habit, also known as ‘One Meal A Day (OMAD)’.
Balcı said, “In this diet, the person can eat as much and whatever he / she wants, provided that there is only one meal at any time. No calorie or macronutrient restriction is applied. People who have a single meal usually eat their meals in the evening, then do not eat anything until the next day and fast. In some studies on single-meal nutrition, it is stated that the best meal to eat is breakfast because eating breakfast can help control blood sugar later in the day and thus reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes ”.
Stating that people who will follow this diet are allowed to drink green tea and coffee without milk, Balcı drew attention to the fact that the consumption of foods rich in all nutrients in this meal is extremely important because they are fed one meal.
The expert dietitian stated that weight loss is seen naturally in these types of nutrition because there is a calorie deficit in a single meal diet, and warned that the diet has a positive effect in studies on weight loss, but that many risks such as the recovery of body fat should be paid attention to.
Stating that long-term hunger increases autophagy and cellular renewal, this means acceleration of fat burning, being healthy and rejuvenating Balcı continued his words as follows:
“It is also said that the OMAD diet is protective against cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, asthma and inflammation, and this effect is associated with the loss of excess weight. Following such a strict diet has some negative consequences for our body. Because they do not get enough energy, people may feel extremely tired, weakness and irritability may occur due to low blood sugar levels. People may have difficulty concentrating on their work. ”
Balcı pointed out that those who follow this diet should pay close attention to sufficient protein, carbohydrate, healthy fats, fiber, seasonal fresh vegetables and fruits. “People who should avoid a single meal are especially diabetic patients. Likewise, it is not a suitable diet model for people with stomach ailments such as gastritis and reflux. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should definitely not follow this diet model, ”he said.
