Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Dr. Bertan Cengiz made a statement on the occasion of 1-30 June scoliosis awareness month. Referring to the incidence of scoliosis, Dr. Cengiz said, “Scoliosis is the name given to the curvature of the spine. Kyphosis is the condition of the spine bending forward. Both can be seen together. Scoliosis can also start in the mother’s womb and can be detected. It is mostly seen in girls. Scoliosis is the first stage of life where the fastest growth is seen. It increases in 5 years and during adolescence. Be careful at this age. 8 or 9 out of 10 patients who apply are girls. Families should observe their children for scoliosis between the ages of 0-5 and during adolescence and consult a specialist if they have symptoms. The reason for 3 out of 100 children “Unknown scoliosis is seen. The rate of incidence in girls is 10 times higher than in boys,” he said.
‘LET’S LOOK AT THE CHILDREN’S SHOULDER BONES’
Dr. Noting that it is important for families to pay attention to the symptoms in the early diagnosis of scoliosis, Cengiz said, “Asymmetry in the shoulder, the scapula being more posterior than the other, the curvature of the pelvis, inequalities in the length of the legs can be signs of scoliosis. Families can observe their children as follows; Let’s take off his top and pay attention to whether his two shoulders are in the same plane when he stands upright. Let’s look at the children’s shoulder blades. It can be an important symptom if it’s not equal. Also, let’s see if there is an S-shaped appearance on his spine when he stands upright and leans forward. If inequality and asymmetry are seen, it is necessary to consult an orthopedist.”
‘SCOLIOSIS CAN AFFECT LUNG AND HEART’
Stating that early diagnosis is very important, Cengiz said, “When scoliosis progresses, it can cause bigger problems. Back scoliosis can affect the lungs and heart. The volume of the thorax, where the lungs are located, narrows, and if the narrowing increases, it can lead to a decrease in lung capacity. The heart is also affected by this narrowing, and it can also cause problems in other internal organs. Children who apply with the suspicion of scoliosis are evaluated as a whole. We take the patient’s spine radiography and x-rays. If needed, we also strengthen our diagnosis with MRI and tomography. Families of children diagnosed with scoliosis are very upset. But; Scoliosis is a common condition. The treatment method for each scoliosis is different. According to the patient’s age and curvature, the patient is followed up with corset and physical therapy. However, surgery may be required in severe scoliosis.
‘EARLY DIAGNOSIS IN SCOLIOSIS IS VERY IMPORTANT’
Emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis, Orthopedic Doctor Bertan Cengiz said:
“Early diagnosis and follow-up in scoliosis is very important. The age of the child and the degree of curvature in scoliosis are the most important considerations for us. As the child grows, the scoliosis curvature may increase. Therefore, a control examination should be performed every 4 to 6 months after the diagnosis of scoliosis. At the same time, in the treatment of scoliosis, the person must comply with the exercises. With successful bracing and exercises, mild scoliosis can be controlled and prevented from progressing. When it cannot be controlled, we start surgical interventions as a physician. With surgical intervention and special systems, we can control the curvature of the spine that causes scoliosis, and we We prevent it from putting pressure on its organs in the future.”
